Overcoming Worry and Drawing Closer to God in Prayer: Emily Wickham E122
[00:00:00]
Kelly: I can’t talk myself out of worry, but God can love me out of worry.
Emily: And that fear and that worry can just jump right in there. But God is teaching me to trust Him even when I don’t understand. I have just started to say to the Lord, “I trust you. I trust you. I trust you.” I just have to let go. He doesn’t change. He’s not going to stop loving me. Even when I mess up, which is all the time, even when I don’t understand, He’s there and He loves me. And that gives me strength.
Welcome to the Unshakable Hope podcast, where real life intersects redeeming love. I’m Kelly Hall, and this is where we wrestle through faith questions, such as how do I trust God’s heart when His ways and delays are breaking mine? We’ll hear from people just like you and me who have experienced God’s faithfulness when life didn’t unfold as they expected.
My prayer is that God would renew our hope in His Word and His love through these [00:01:00] conversations.
Kelly: Hey, friends. I think all of us have struggled to pray at times, and we probably had times when we were longing for an answer to something that was breaking our hearts, and wondered if God was even paying attention. I believe today we’re gonna uncover some treasures about prayer that God will use to encourage our hearts and draw us deeper into intimacy with himself.
Kelly: And maybe we’ll even discover the beauty and simplicity of talking to the one who is already talking to us. My guest writes, “I’m passionate about prayer because it connects me to our Heavenly Father. He never disappoints. I can count on Him to always help and encourage me. Time with the Lord in prayer fills me with hope.”
Kelly: Mm. I am so grateful to have Emily Wickham join me today. She is the author of Closer to God: A 10-Week Study on Prayer. [00:02:00] She loves sharing God’s word with women and seeing Him open their eyes to His wonder. She is a podcaster, YouTuber, devotional writer, and blogger. Whether she’s walking on the beach, sipping coffee on her porch, or cooking a good meal, Emily delights in God’s goodness.
Kelly: She’s blessed to be Mark’s wife for more than 36 years, the mother of four adult children, and a mother-in-love. Emily enjoys life in South Carolina, and we actually met at a conference not too far from there at the Communicators’ Collective. So Emily, I am so glad you’re here today.
Emily: Oh, thank you so much for having me, Kelly.
Emily: It’s great to be here.
Kelly: I know you’ve been on this prayer journey for a long time, and it’s so cool that, you have found a publisher, and your Bible study is out. So I’m wondering if you could share some milestones in your prayer journey, uh, how God has revealed Himself, uh, and as you’ve been teaching about prayer, maybe [00:03:00] even what you’ve seen happen in women’s lives.
Emily: It might sound odd, but as I think about milestones, I can’t help but picture my upstairs hall closet that I spent so much time in. When I was a young mom, a, a younger wife.
Kelly: Yeah.
Emily: We had this upstairs closet that was not attractive by any means. It was full of clothing and stuff from the house. But it was a quiet space- Mm-hmm
Emily: where I could go. And I had a little chair in there, but I was able to kneel in there and just open my heart up to the Lord. And it I have the sweetest memories from that little place, because I always came out of that space filled with hope, because God always met me there. He always comforted me. And, um- Another place that comes to mind is being outside.
Emily: I discovered sometime down the road that I really enjoyed [00:04:00] being in nature and talking to the Lord. Often I would pray with my eyes open and just look around at God’s creation. I kind of created this little prayer garden outside of our home and-
Kelly: Wow …
Emily: I’m not a best, I’m not a, I’m not a fabulous gardener, so the, the plants were a little bit pitiful.
Emily: But I did have my little chair out there, and- Yeah … I would go out. We lived in the woods, so I could go out in the morning with my coffee. And I was usually in my bathrobe. And I could just sit there, and I could talk to the Lord and I, I really treasure those times as well. Mm-hmm. But wherever I live, it doesn’t matter because God welcomes me into His presence where it, it really doesn’t matter where we are.
Emily: Yeah … but those are just some highlights along the way. I live in a different location now, so, you know, I’m finding new little spots to talk to the Lord and pray.
Kelly: I love that you [00:05:00] said
Kelly: you prayed with your eyes open when you’re outside. We have always prayed with our eyes open because we have three hearing impaired children. . And so they’d need to lip read while we were praying.
Kelly: Well, I’m wondering if you could tell us about what you’ve learned about prayer- … through times of heartache or weariness.
Emily: Mm-hmm. Again, that puts me back in that closet because that was the place where I really was going through some tough heartache.
Emily: And that opportunity to express what I was feeling inside- When I could just open my heart up to the Lord and tell him about those things with tears running down my face, he listened and I knew that he loved me. I knew that he does love me, that he cares for me. And I knew that he was my safe place, that I could just tell him anything and everything.
Emily: I mean, he already knows. He already knows everything. [00:06:00] But it’s very healing to be able to talk to the Lord and just lay it all out there, and to sense his presence with you to really feel his comfort. It’s just his strength. So, I definitely, just really treasure that lesson along the way.
Emily: Mm-hmm. He’s always … You know, what is that Psalm 46:1, He’s our very present help in time of trouble. So he wants us to come to him, to never give up, even if it’s just so hard we don’t even know what to pray. The Holy Spirit helps us. That’s Romans chapter 8. , He has those groanings that are too deep for words.
Emily: When we truly don’t have the words, he knows what’s going on, but he wants us to come.
Kelly: Yeah. Absolutely. Well, you said that every time you would pray, you would pour out your heart- Mm … and in those places you would sense the Lord speaking and [00:07:00] strengthening helping and giving you hope for the day.
Kelly: There was a transformation that occurred. Mm. And I’m just wondering how you open your heart to hear from him, because my suspicion is that you didn’t do all the talking when you prayed.
Emily: Well, a beautiful thing happens a lot of times where the Holy Spirit will bring a scripture verse to mind.
Emily: That happened just recently when I was praying about a troubling situation, and Just, you know, it’s not like you hear an audible voice or anything, but it’s like this scripture just kind of ran through my mind. And a friend had shared it with me earlier in the day, and the Holy Spirit took that and just brought it before me, brought it into the spotlight again.
Emily: It was a verse from Isaiah 26 verse three about how that God keeps us in perfect peace when our mind is [00:08:00] stayed on him. So that, I think that God’s word and prayer work so much in concert together. So that is what I have experienced where the Holy Spirit brings scripture to mind, and it helps me, it encourages me, and it guides me, and kind of shows me the next step and so that’s been-
Kelly: Absolutely.
Kelly: Knowing his word- Yes … has been such a tremendous help. But if, even for those who may not have a lot of scripture memorized- … you don’t have to. No. Just grab a hold of one promise that speaks to you, and then just pray it every day. And God would help, will help you as you pray.
Kelly: Yes. And as you sit with him in the parts of your life that really break your heart, he will help you see more clearly the hope in that word and the fact that he is with you in those places.
Emily: Yes.
Kelly: One of the things that does help me when I am just struggling to hear from the [00:09:00] Lord is movement.
Kelly: If I am just walking, even walking in my house and declaring- Mm … his word out loud.
Kelly: Then maybe going outside and just asking the Lord to reveal himself to me. And like you said, it doesn’t have to be an audible voice or even a very clear in my mind kind of a voice. Mm. Sometimes, recently I was reading Psalm 91.
Kelly: Mm. And I was just praying about some adult children who are struggling, and then my husband is nearing retirement, and he was wanting to do something to celebrate. And it’s always hard for me to celebrate because I’m like, “No, things are not fixed and finished, settled and solved.” I mean, like, I don’t know that I can.
Kelly: Mm-hmm. And as I was walking and just saw the sun, the morning sun peeking through the trees, I just sensed the Lord, and not even in words. Yeah. Just an invitation to celebrate, and almost a conviction. I w- I’m giving you a gift.
Emily: Mm.
Kelly: Celebrate it with your husband. [00:10:00] Mm.
Kelly: So beautiful the way the Lord speaks to us.
Kelly: Yeah. Earlier I had been reading Psalm 91, just, and just that fresh picture of God’s presence with us and how he protects us and moves in our love relationship to deliver us, to help us, to strengthen us. And I had sensed even before the walk that God was telling me all these areas that you’re worried about- Mm
Kelly: I’ve got them in my hands. Mm. And it gave me peace. Mm. It gave me peace. And then the Lord invited me to celebrate as I walked. I just love his heart. I love his heart.
Emily: Yes. That’s beautiful.
Kelly: What have you learned about God that has freed you to connect more intimately with his heart? And maybe even something, as you’ve been teaching this, you’ve taught this for many years to women.
Emily: Mm. Mm-hmm.
Kelly: What have you seen break through in someone else’s heart that helped them connect to God’s heart?
Emily: Well, I would say first of all, [00:11:00] one thing I’ve learned about the Lord is just how he always welcomes me into his presence.
Kelly: Mm.
Emily: And I have that confidence that I can go to him whenever. He’s never too busy for me. He is a busy God. He’s always working. He’s always doing something. Mm. But he’s never too busy for me, and he always welcomes me, and he’s the best listener out there, and he doesn’t interrupt me while I’m just pouring my heart out or talking.
Emily: He lets me express my heart. So, translating that and thinking about just different women in my life that I’ve been able to interact with, I have to think about that for a minute just in the different studies that we’ve , done about prayer, I think about one lady who was mentioning from one of the studies that, that I taught about how Hannah’s prayer really ministered to her because Hannah [00:12:00] prayed through her grief and difficulty, and she was able to have peace through it all.
Emily: So just I think seeing those different people in the Bible through the circumstances that they had, that is something that really connects with us. So the different ladies that I’ve been able to share this study with over the years, I think for all of us, we … those stories in the Bible, they connect, they resonate.
Emily: And Hannah’s story, that’s, that’s the first one in Closer to God, and it’s a portrait of hope.
Kelly: I love that so much. I have found, too, as I have been teaching and speaking to women, I mean, and certainly I’ve experienced it myself, that as I shared the truth that we can tell God the truth about our grief and He meets us there and He heals us in His love I can remember one woman in particular just coming up to me in tears- feeling as if God saw her grief. She had lost her daughter many years before. Mm. [00:13:00] But it was only then when she felt like she had the freedom to tell God the truth about how much it hurt and receive God’s love in that place that it, her heart was healed.
Emily: Yeah. Yeah. And I think it’s good, too, to think about, to realize that sometimes those healings and, and those feelings, they
Emily: it can be an instant happening, and it also can be, I think even more times than not, a long process. And that’s hard for me because the waiting. The waiting can be so hard. But God is still there. He is faithful, and He hears us as we keep crying out to Him, as we keep bringing those requests to Him. And it’s just a journey.
Kelly: It is a journey, and … God just takes us deeper and deeper into those places of healing as we wait on Him for things that are breaking our hearts. Yes. I’m wondering if you have a scripture that has helped you hold onto Him whi- while you’re [00:14:00] waiting on something that is really precious to you.
Emily: Oh, good- there are so many. Yeah,
Kelly: I’m
Emily: sure. There’s just people I know that I … that, that seem to come to mind at different times. One that I can remember praying about something really difficult, and the Lord brought that scripture from Isaiah, I think it’s Isaiah 40 verse 28, about how He never grows weary or tired, and His understanding is inscrutable.
Emily: And it just ministered to me so much because we as moms, as wives, as women, we just get really weary and tired. Yeah. It’s just life. You know? God never grows weary, and I think we can apply that to our prayer lives. He never gets weary or tired of hearing what I need to share with Him or what you need to share or what anyone needs to express to Him.
Emily: And His understanding is something so amazing we can’t even understand it ourselves. So [00:15:00] that has very much encouraged me and just kind of, it just kind of helps, helps you keep going-
Kelly: Yes, it does … and
Emily: keep, keep talking to Him.
Kelly: And the fact that He understands and sees everything, that He’s outside of time, that has given me- Yeah
Kelly: so much comfort in really difficult situations. Mm-hmm. I would picture Him up ahead of me on the journey with all the provisions I needed in His arms. And He would say- Mm-hmm … “Come here. I’ve got you covered.” “It’s all gonna come clear right here.” Oh, I love that. “It’s part of your journey.” Yeah,
Emily: that’s great.
Kelly: Well, something we all experience is fear and worry. You’ve already shared- … that verse from Isaiah about peace. Mm-hmm. But I’m wondering if you could share another story about how God rescued you from fear and worry, and maybe even share what it was you were afraid of.
Emily: Mm. Oh, goodness.
Emily: I don’t know how, how to even go into that because I feel like God is really dealing with me about fear and worry in my life right now. I think sometimes we can even be dealing with those things and we don’t even realize it.
Kelly: [00:16:00] Oh,
Emily: absolutely. But He is, yeah, He is making me a lot more aware of that fear and that worry, and how it’s not pleasing to Him.
Emily: And I think it can even be something where, um, it can be like a fleshly pattern that we just fall into because we’re used to doing that. We’re used to just being afraid. We’re used to just worrying about things. But God wants us to trust Him. And Proverbs 3:5-6, where He says, you know, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own unders- ” I get hung up with that because I want to understand things.
Emily: I want to figure things out. But I can’t. You know, it’s like being on that hamster wheel where you’re trying to figure things out. And in my life, I think over the last year, year and a half, I’ve really been dealing just with some difficult issues in my family, and that’s, like, so close to my [00:17:00] heart, my family.
Emily: Sure. And that fear and that worry can just jump right in there. But God is teaching me to trust Him even when I don’t understand. And sometimes I have just started to say to the Lord, “I trust you. I trust you. I trust you.” I just have to let go. And then He taught me an even more, I think, meaningful way to pray.
Emily: Instead of, of expressing that I trust Him is for me to say to Him- You love me. You love me. You love me. Because we know that perfect love casts out fear, and so He has used that scripture, and even just repeating His love for me. That’s who He is. He doesn’t change. He’s not going to stop loving me. Even when I mess up, which is all the time, even when I don’t understand, He’s there and He loves me.
Emily: And that, that gives me strength.
Kelly: Mm. [00:18:00] That’s so powerful.
Emily: Mm.
Kelly: When my girls were going through, after we had kind of gone through the worst of the journey healing from or, uh, recovering from the Lyme disease treatments- Wow … and they were moving toward a place where they were more stable, I think I spent the next three years, two to three years, just on scriptures that told me that God loved me.
Emily: Mm.
Kelly: And I would … And that really did heal my heart from the fear and worry of the future. Yeah. I’m reading a book right now called Learn- Learning to be Loved by Mark Greene, and I think David Bound is the other author. But it’s just powerful.
Emily: Yeah.
Kelly: As sometimes I’ll even picture- Jesus standing in front of me just saying, “I love you so much.
Kelly: I love you so much.” And I’ll think about Zephaniah 3:17- Oh,
Emily: yes …
Kelly: which just describes the fact that the Lord delights in us. Mm. He quiets us with His love.
Kelly: It’s just such a beautiful picture of the fact that He’s not holding [00:19:00] out on us. So many times when we’re praying, we feel like we are being … That He is holding out.
Kelly: Like, there’s a verse that says, “He will withhold no good thing from those that he loves,” and we’re like I feel like you are,” but remembering how much He loves us, meditating on how much He loves us, how delighted He is in us, that He’s not mad at us, that these things that are not coming into our life right now are not being withheld because He’s mad.
Kelly: Mm-hmm. They are just part of a perfect story that He is weaving together that is more beautiful and powerful than we can even imagine.
Emily: Mm-hmm.
Kelly: And when I rest in His love, it really does quiet the fear and quiet the worry.
Emily: Yes. Mm-hmm.
Kelly: I know you’ve talked to many people when they have struggled to hear God’s voice or- Mm
Kelly: struggled to feel the comfort of His presence. Mm. How would you talk to them about hope during the times when it seems like God feels distant?
Emily: [00:20:00] Hebrews 13 verse 5 tells us that the Lord promises He will never leave us. He will never forsake us. And so we have to cling to that promise.
Emily: And I am a ve- very feeling person, so it’s hard for me when my feelings can just kind of be all over the place. I have to remember God never changes. He is always the same yesterday, today, and forever. And so if we’re struggling to connect or to feel like He’s near, we have to cling to those promises of scripture.
Emily: Another one is James 4 verse 8 where He says that for those who draw near to Him, it says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” So I just want to encourage people to, despite how we are feeling, keep going to the Lord in prayer because He hears us. Mm-hmm. When we come in the name of His Son, the Lord Jesus [00:21:00] Christ, God hears us, and He listens, and He cares.
Emily: And, and we m- just might be in this place where we can’t feel it- But we have to just cling to the truth, the truth of His word and the truth of who God is. It’s very powerful. He is our rock, and we can be sure He’s not going to shift. He’s not going to change. He’s not gonna go away.
Kelly: Absolutely. I just posted something about that on my website recently, that we can believe the one who is our rock rather than the sea that we’re in that seems to ebb and flow and move with every storm.
Emily: Yes.
Kelly: And, and one of the hope prayers, so I have a place on my website, it’s free, and it’s just called Hope for the Weary Collection. And one, the first prayer, the H prayer, is, “Lord, help me to hold tight to your word-”
Kelly: until your voice is louder than my circumstances and your love [00:22:00] is larger than my fears.”
Kelly: It’s a prayer that I’ve prayed often as I sit in His love, and I, it helps the … And it just helps me so much as the word of God, as I rehearse the word of God and declare it out loud. And the Lord, because His word is living and active, He is moving inside of me in supernatural ways that defy my imagination.
Kelly: I can’t talk myself out of worry, but God can love me out of worry.
Emily: Yes. Yes.
Kelly: One of the things that I’ve noticed as I’ve studied the word and I’ve taught about so much is that humility and dependence on the Lord is really key- … in learning how to pray. And it’s something that we can incorporate in our prayers in a way that, seems to open up more communication with the Lord- – – Mm-hmm
Kelly: if we come to Him with a humble heart. I wonder if you can talk about that and just share what you’ve learned about humility and dependence as it relates to, prayer.
Emily: Yes. I feel like [00:23:00] the older I get the more the Lord reveals my sinfulness to me, which will help me be humble. It’s just more apparent I think. You know, I think when I was younger, you know, it’s like things didn’t even occur to me. You don’t even see certain things. Like, we just keep growing.
Emily: We just keep changing, and it’s all God’s grace to show us these things. And it does help me to be more humble because I have nothing to offer to the Lord. One of the prayers that I wrote about in Closer to God is the tax gatherer’s prayer, and he was a portrait of humility because he came to God, he didn’t have big, long, eloquent words.
Emily: It was very simple. But he wanted God to have mercy on him because he saw himself not just as a sinner, but as the sinner. He fully [00:24:00] accounted for his sinful nature and that propensity we all have towards sin. And I’ve been thinking lately, uh, even about Peter and how he said, “Lord,” you know, “depart from me.
Emily: I am a sinful man.” And so we see our sinfulness, which, you know, helps us to have an increase in humility, and yet it’s beautiful that God- He doesn’t just berate us and just, criticize us all like, “You’re such a sinner. You’re so terrible.” That’s not God’s heart toward us. I think he wants us to recognize where we are, but he responds to us and reaches out to us in love.
Emily: You know, he sees us through the lens of our faith in his Son, our relationship, and Jesus has given us his righteousness. So that’s, you know, that’s the confidence we have in approaching God.
Kelly: It’s all God. Absolutely. It’s all [00:25:00] God. Mm-hmm. It- it’s his grace. He comes to us with so much grace. He sees- Yeah … when the Father looks at us, he sees Jesus.
Emily: Yeah.
Kelly: He sees us through the righteousness of Christ- Yes … and helps heal our hearts. I, I think the thing that I struggled with the most as I was starting early on in this journey of parenting is pride and control freak issues. And so I was always having to surrender something. Like, I’m trying to fix everybody in my life, and the moment I would start to see me try to manipulate someone else, I would be like, “Oh, yuck.
Kelly: Okay, no. No.” That is, that’s just all about control. It’s not trusting the Lord, and it’s not loving them- Mm-hmm …
Emily: the
Kelly: way God wants me to love them. So- Mm-hmm … I just, I love the example of the tax collector just saying, “Lord, have mercy on me. Have mercy on me, a sinner.” And then also the story of the centurion who had- Mm
Kelly: um, a servant who, he had [00:26:00] someone that needed healing. Mm-hmm. I believe the Bible describes it as his servant.
Emily: Mm-hmm. But
Kelly: he sent a message to Jesus, and as Jesus was coming, he sent him another message. Mm-hmm. “Lord, you don’t even, you don’t even need to come into my house. I’m not worthy of that. You have all authority.
Kelly: All authority is yours. All you have to do is say the word.” Yeah. And then Jesus celebrates his humility and his dependence on the Lord. He understood- … Christ’s authority and power better than most of the people in the town, in Jerusalem. Most of the Jews- … didn’t understand it as well as he did.
Kelly: So I, I really love his example of just, “Lord, all you have to do is say the word.” Yeah. “Just say the word.” Mm-hmm. And that’s a really simple prayer, too, as we wait- Mm-hmm … on the Lord- Mm-hmm … to, uh, to work. And I love the truth, too, that God is always working. He’s always working. He’s doing things behind the scenes- Yes
Kelly: that would thrill our hearts and make us feel so loved and confident if we could see it [00:27:00] all. Well, as you think about someone who may be struggling to connect with God in prayer- … I’m wondering what words of hope you might want to speak over them, and maybe a verse, too, that you often teach.
Emily: I would say that God knows you intimately. And Psalm 139 is a beautiful psalm that teaches us about this, about how He is intimately acquainted with all our ways. And so we can have that comfort, Knowing that God already knows every aspect of our lives. He loves us. He wants us to come into His presence.
Emily: He’s our counselor. We learn that in Isaiah how, you know, it lists the, how He’s wonderful, counselor. We can talk to Him. We can unburden what we’re carrying, and He will give us that hope we long for. We’re not going to find it in this world. You know, we, now God does use other people, godly [00:28:00] people, to help us and encourage us.
Emily: But we always want to put God first and recognize He is our source of hope. He’s the God of hope. So I also would encourage people that are, are struggling in that place to just follow the Lord’s example about how He would often go to a quiet place to pray. He understood the importance of being in His father’s presence and being assured of what He needed assurance, or maybe that’s not the right way to put it.
Emily: He needed His father’s direction and guidance as He walked on this earth. So we need that, and we need to follow His example. I think just getting into a quiet place can be a challenge for a lot of people, but we need to put, make that a priority and spend that time. And it doesn’t have to be, like, you know, for [00:29:00] 30 minutes or a certain amount of time.
Emily: It doesn’t have to be certain types of way that you talk to the Lord. It’s just being real with Him and opening your heart to Him and speaking what comes to mind. Just talking to the Lord about it.
Kelly: Yeah. Mm-hmm. I think one of the things that we’ve talked about is the truth that there’s already a conversation going on.
Kelly: The Trinity is delighted in us. Mm-hmm. He loves us so much. The Holy Spirit is interceding for us. Yes. Jesus is interceding for us. Yes. And the Bible tells us the Holy Spirit prays for us and groans that are too deep for words. So even when we don’t have words, even listening is prayer. Even crying before the Lord is prayer.
Emily: Mm-hmm.
Kelly: All these things that may be wordless. Mm-hmm. We can just hold them up to the Lord. Just hold the emotion up to the Lord, and even that is prayer. Mm-hmm. And He sees us, and He meets us in that place. I love that you referred us to the example of Jesus, and it made me [00:30:00] recall the story of the woman at the well.
Kelly: Mm-hmm. When Jesus says, “We have to go to Samaria.” Mm-hmm. Already the Lord had revealed, His father, His heavenly Father had revealed to Him as they prayed through the Spirit that was where He was gonna do some- Big time ministry. And so he knew he would meet someone there, and that was, that’s so beautiful.
Kelly: Maybe God had even already given him vision- Yeah … and knowledge of that particular woman.
Emily: Yeah. So
Kelly: yes, we- Mm-hmm … we need the Lord. We do not know how to do this life. There’s so much mystery, and there’s so much confusion, and there’s so many misunderstandings about who God is and really what’s happening in our story- Mm
Kelly: that we are desperately in need of the one who holds all the answers and all the wisdom- Yeah … and all the knowledge, and loves us more than we can imagine. Deeply invested in our stories, and he knows how to get us where we need to go.
Emily: Yes. Yes, he does.
